Startup/Shutdown Script not working:

Problem:

in Microsoft Windows 7, if you have ZoneAlarm Free Firewall: Startup and Shutdown scripts do not work.

Cause:

 the registry entries at:

 HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\Scripts\Startup\
 HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\Scripts\Shutdown\
 HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\State\Machine\Scripts\Startup\
 HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\State\Machine\Scripts\Shutdown\

-get automatically deleted by the process svchost.exe, which also hosts the Group Policy Client service (gpsvc).

here is a dump from Process Monitor:
delete registry operations captured by Process Monitor

Solution/Workaround:
  1. Shutdown ZoneAlarm
  2. recreate the Shutdown/Startup Script entry using the Group Policy Editor (GPEdit.msc).
  3. Start ZoneAlarm.
